The Bioceramics Young Scholar Award recognizes excellence in research among current degree-seeking graduate students and postdoctoral research associates.
Nomination Process
A letter from a faculty advisor or postdoctoral advisor verifying compliance to this rule must accompany the application.
All applicants are required to submit two abstracts:
- Submit one short abstract to a bioceramics-focused symposium via the MS&T abstract submission site. The short abstract will be used for organizing the technical program of the MS&T meeting.
- Submit a second, extended abstract (2,000 words maximum plus figures and tables) to the bioceramics division chair for evaluation by the division’s awards committee. The extended abstract should contain a summary of the nominee’s work (approximately 2,000 words plus figures) relevant to the interests of the division.
The nomination profile should also include:
- Nominee’s latest CV
- Two supporting letters
The award will be presented at the ACerS Annual Meeting/MS&T. All Young Scholar Award applicants are expected to submit an abstract for either a poster or an oral presentation in a bioceramics-focused symposium at the meeting.
The award winner will present an invited oral presentation at a bioceramics-focused symposium at the MS&T conference. The awardee shall receive a certificate, glass piece, and complimentary registration.
The deadline for nominations is January 31 in the year preceding the MS&T conference.

Srimanta Barui
Srimanta Barui, Ph.D., is currently Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Kentucky MBDA Advanced Manufacturing Center (US Dept. of Commerce), Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Louisville, USA. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, India in Biomaterials Science and Engineering. Prior to this, he earned the Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Materials Science from the Sardar Patel University, Gujarat, India and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Industrial Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math, West Bengal, India.
During his Ph.D., Dr. Barui’s research theme unboxed a combined set of experimental and theoretical toolkits to develop quantitative understandings of the transient process physics of binderjet 3D printing of bioceramics and metallic biomaterials. Intelligent application of engineering design expertise in developing clinical models or implant designs with clinically relevant features, a unique blend of this expertise together with the core knowledge of biomaterials science and advanced additive manufacturing established the corner stones of his research domain. Apart from the knowledge mining in the unexplored areas of bioceramics and metallic biomaterials additive manufacturing, Dr. Barui extended his expertise further in the additive manufacturing of ceramic and polymeric biomaterials in the regeneration of engineering of complex musculoskeletal tissues, as a part of his recent Post-Doctoral research.
Dr. Barui published more than 15 peer-reviewed high impact research articles (> 85% as lead author) including published International (US, WO, EP) and Indian patents as the lead author. Apart from this, he contributed as a corresponding author in many review and research articles in this list. Besides academic research, in collaboration with clinicians and industries, Dr. Barui significantly contributed in translating the developed laboratory scaled technologies. During his Ph.D., Dr. Barui transferred couple of technologies to various industries as well.
He is a member of the American Ceramic Society (Engineering Ceramic division), the European Ceramic Society, the Society of Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India) and the American Society of Metals (ASM International). Dr. Barui is currently the representative of President’s Council of Student Advisors, Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organ India (SBAOI), USA Chapter.
Dr. Barui ranked 09 in All India in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship for Split-Site Ph.D. studies in the University of Manchester, UK. He also awarded Distinction in his Master’s degree along with the recipient of the State Government Merit Scholarship during his Bachelor studies. Apart from scientific research, Dr. Barui has also been in charge of teaching and mentoring of Undergraduate Students, PhD Scholars and Professionals for education program on Engineering Design of Biomedical Devices and Additive Manufacturing of Biomaterials.
