The purpose of the Engineering Ceramics Division of The American Ceramic Society is to stimulate interest in the development and utilization of technology that falls within the broad category termed engineering ceramics. Members accomplish this by means of meetings for the presentation and discussion of professional papers, publication of professional literature, and promotion of scientific and industrial research.

Nominations are now open for the 2016 James I. Mueller and the Bridge Building Awards. Award presentations will be made during the 40th Annual International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites held in Daytona Beach, Florida, January 2016. 

James I. Mueller Memorial Award

This award recognizes the enormous contributions of James I. Mueller to the Engineering Ceramics Division and the field of engineering ceramics. It is the intent of this award to recognize the accomplishments of individuals who have made similar contributions.

The two main criteria used in selecting the recipient are:

  1. Long-term service to the Engineering Ceramics Division, and
  2. Work in the area of engineering ceramics that has made a significant industrial, national, or academic impact.

Award selection can be based on either of these criteria or a combination of both.

The award consists of a memorial plaque, certificate, and an honorarium of $1000.

Nominations for the 2016 Mueller award are now open. Nomination deadline is July 1, 2015

Bridge Building Award

This award recognizes individuals outside of the United States who have made outstanding contributions to engineering ceramics.

The two main criteria used in selecting the recipient are:

    1. Contribution to the field of engineering ceramics, including expansion of the knowledge base and commercial use thereof, and
    2. Contribution to the visibility of the field and international advocacy.

The award can be based on either criteria and consists of a plaque, certificate, and an honorarium of $1000.

Nominations for the 2016 Bridge Building award are now open. Nomination deadline is July 1, 2015.

Bridge Building Award Past Recipients

Global Young Investigator Award

This award recognizes the outstanding young ceramic engineer and scientist whose achievements have been significant to the profession and to the general welfare of the community around the globe. Nominations are open to candidates from industry, academia, or government-funded laboratory – across the world.

The award winner will present a keynote lecture at the Global Young Investigator Forum of the ICACC meeting.

The main criteria used in selecting the recipient of this award will be: 

(1) the individual’s contribution to the field of Ceramic Science and Engineering, including expansion of the knowledge base and their commercial use and 

(2) the individual’s contributions to the promotion of conferences and technical events, global young professional forum, and other professional events, which resulted in visibility of the field and international advocacy.

A nominee must be 35 years old or younger at the time of award presentation (January of the award year), and is required to be a member of The American Ceramic Society. Nominations can be made by any individual or group. Self nominations are permitted, but are not recommended/preferred. Nominations made by a sponsor who is a member of The American Ceramic Society are strongly preferred.

The award consists of US $1,000 honorarium and a certificate of achievement, as well as complimentary registration.

The deadline for nominations is July 15 in the year preceding the next International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites. Send your nominations (preferably by email), including a written statement of the nominee’s qualifications and contributions, to:

Global Young Investigator Award Past Recipients


Daytona Beach Best Paper and Poster Awards

ECD selects Daytona Beach Best Papers and Best Posters each year from the papers and posters that are presented at the annual Daytona Beach Conference.

The Daytona Beach Best Paper Awards will be selected from the papers that are presented at the Conference and submitted in written paper format for the Conference proceeding publications, and that are recommended or nominated for Best Paper award consideration by one of the Conference paper technical reviewers or an ECD member. Invited papers are not eligible for awards.

The Best Paper Award Selection Committee will consist of ECD Program Chair, ECD Vice Program Chair (Chair-Elect), Proceedings Editor and Co-Editor, and ECD Awards Committee Chair. Additional Award Selection Committee members may include the ECD awards committee members, and/or other technical reviewers.

The Best Paper Selection Committee will evaluate the recommended and/or nominated candidate papers using the criteria of “Originality,” “Quality and Thoroughness of Methods, Tests and Applications,” “Style,” “Technical/Scientific Strength,” and “Impact to the Ceramics Community” to select the Best Papers.

The Daytona Beach Best Poster Awards will be selected from the posters that are presented at the Daytona Beach Conference during the specified poster presentation period when the poster evaluation is performed.

The Best Poster Award selection committee will consist of ECD Awards Committee Chair, and the Award Committee Members. Additional Award Selection Committee members may include ECD Program Chair and other technical reviewers.

The Best Poster Selection Committee will evaluate all eligible posters using the criteria of “Quality of Presentation,” “Quality and Thoroughness of Methods, Tests and Applications,” “Technical/Scientific Strength,” and “Impact to the Ceramics Community” to select the Best Posters. The Best Papers and Best Posters must be in the upper twentieth percentile, based on the selection committee’s overall evaluations.

The Best Paper Awards and Best Poster Awards will consist of first, second and third prizes for each contest. The cash awards for the first, second and third place prizes of each award category (the Best Paper or Best Poster) will be $500, $300 and $200, respectively. All winning authors will also receive award certificates.

Honorable mentions will be made at the Awards Committee’s discretion.

The identification of papers/poster specific evaluations will be destroyed after the meeting.
